In 2011, British novelist E. L. James self-published her erotic novel 50 Shades of Grey. This was followed by two further volumes: 50 Shades of Grey and 50 Shades of Grey.

These three novels sold over 125 million copies worldwide. The books feature a young literature graduate, Anastasia Steele, and Christian Grey, a millionaire businessman. The latter introduces her to the joys and practices of BDSM. Erotic scenes highlight sexual submission and sado masochism. Anastasia becomes Mr.Grey's submissive. They are bound by a contract.

From 2015 onwards, films adapted from the novels are released internationally to the delight of all fans. Jamie Dornan plays the mystical Christian Grey and sexy Dakota Johnson the shy Anastasia Steele.
